Attorney General, House Speaker To Make Case in Court

ID=6690659COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Two of South Carolina's top Republican elected officials are getting ready to face off at the state Supreme Court.

Attorney General Alan Wilson and Speaker Bobby Harrell are appearing Tuesday before the justices. Wilson is appealing a judge's ruling that a legislative panel must first sign off before he pursues charges against the speaker.

Harrell says Judge Casey Manning was right to rule the House Ethics Committee is the appropriate place to deal with such allegations.

A think tank accused Harrell of using his powerful position for personal benefit, including getting a permit for his pharmaceutical business and appointing his brother to a judicial candidate screening committee.
