Spartanburg, SC (Greenville News) - An Upstate elementary school is bolstering security measures after baggies of cocaine and heroin were found on school property this week.
Baggies of illicit powder substances were found in the carpool line of Mary H. Wright Elementary School on South Church Street in Spartanburg on Monday.
A Spartanburg School District 7 maintenance worker spotted the items and turned them over to an assistant principal who notified the Spartanburg Police Department, said Sally Gregg, a school district spokeswoman.
"None of our children were in proximity to the bags," Gregg said.
The school principal contacted parents by phone to notify them of the finding.
Gregg said she expects that the baggies accidentally fell out of a vehicle.
"Our best guess is that it fell out of someone's car," she said. "it was accidental or random, incredibly random."
On Wednesday, the school made efforts to limit the amount of foot and vehicle traffic coming onto school grounds.
Gates have been locked to the side and back entrances of the school's parking lots, Gregg said, so there is only one entry point to the school.
"We're consolidating traffic flow on our campus," Gregg said. "By the back gate is a neighborhood and the side gate is near another neighborhood. Locking those sort of minimizes any sort of foot transportation, vehicle and foot transportation."
The police department is investigating, Gregg said.
