CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The family of a man shot to death by a North Charleston police officer now charged with murder has filed legal papers asking a judge to approve a $6.5 million wrongful-death settlement.
The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/1Pd7Tek) reports that court papers give Walter Scott's estate $3 million.
The settlement gives annuities totaling $1 million to three of Scott's four children. The attorneys for Scott's family will get nearly $2.4 million.
About $17,000 will pay Scott's back child support. Scott's family says he feared he would go to jail for what he owed when officer Michael Slager pulled him over just before the fatal shooting in April.
North Charleston will pay $5.5 million and its insurance company will pay the remaining $1 million of the settlement announced in October.
