Camp Founded by Chick-fil-A Spends Its First Summer in Columbia

WinShape Camps was started by the owners of Chick-Fil-A in 1985 as a way to give back to the kids in their community — this is the first year it's being offered here in Columbia.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - WinShape Camps was started by the owners of Chick-Fil-A in 1985 as a way to give back to the kids in their community — this is the first year it's being offered here in Columbia.

"They are able to be around people that actually support them, actually love them and want the best for them in their life, and want to encourage them and see their potential," says Camp Director Chasten Pounds.

The summer camp offers numerous activities, such archery, soccer, art and crafts and more. And even though the camp is Christian-based, Pounds says it's open to everyone.

Pounds says, "We have 19 skills that the campers can take part of. So it is Christian-based, but you don't have to be a Christian to take part in the camp at all."

The camp also teaches things like leadership, and building friendships. For 12-year-old Greylyn, who is homeschooled, it's a chance for her make new friends in the community.

Greylyn says, "I've done soccer, yard games and crafts and stuff. We've done kickball. It's really fun because I get to meet other people. And I'm home-schooled so I don't really get to interact with other people, so this is really good for me."

Pounds has witnessed kids transform during their time at the camps.

"When they come in on Monday someone could be disengaged on what going on, or not have many friends. And by Wednesday, Thursday and Friday they're into it. They have a friend or two even more, and they're having the best time of their life so far. And they even want to come back for the next experience next year." he explains.

The camp is open to kids in first through ninth grade, and offers both day and overnight camp.
