Cayce, SC (WLTX) - Cayce city officials are planning to demolish nine different homes and commercial structures which they've deemed dangerous.

It's a part of the city's unsafe structure program.

"The number one properties are the ones that are most likely to come down," said Shaun Greenwood.

Greenwood is the Assistant City Manager for the City of Cayce. Greenwood said the city has compiled a list of over 30 different structures that they believe need to be repaired or torn down.

At the top of that list is 1107 Allen Street.

"This will be the first house that we try to work on to get removed in the city," Greenwood said. "This definitely needs to come down."

JB Whatley bought the property at auction in June. He said he didn't learn of the property's condition until after the purchase was final.

"It's a hazard. If kids are around it or something like that, kids or animals could get hurt," said Whatley

Whatley said he plans to have the house demolished by December, but he said he doesn't want the city involved.

"I agree it should be cleaned up. It should have been cleaned up earlier, but no I agree it should be cleaned up. I'll clean it up rather than them do it," he said.

According to Greenwood, the city budgeted about $50,000 for the project and plan on removing about nine different structures by the end of the year.

"We're thinking it'll run about $5,000 per house," said Greenwood.

Whatley said he thinks that's too expensive.

"I can get it cleaned up cheaper than that," Whatley said.

Greenwood said officials will be notifying owners within the coming months.

Time spans will differ between structures, but they will give between 30 to 120 days for both parties to resolve the problem, whether that be demolition or reconstruction.

There will be a public hearing before the final reading on September 16, deciding on whether or not to finalize the cost of fees associated with the projects.
