Lee County K-9 Mikka's memorial service set after tragic line-of-duty death

K-9 units are also encouraged to attend but will need to arrive early.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Lee County officials have announced a memorial service for K-9 Mikka, who died in the line of duty weeks earlier.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office will hold the memorial service on Oct. 9 at 3 p.m. at El Bethel Faith Community Church, 905 Longtown Road, in Lugoff. Officials said all K-9 units that want to attend the memorial and receive the procession should arrive at the church no later than 2:15 p.m.

Mikka died on Sept. 20 when the vehicle she was in caught fire as a suspect opened fire with a rifle on law enforcement who were pinned down nearby. Investigators believe gunfire sparked the fire that engulfed the vehicle. The suspect was wanted in the shooting of a McBee officer hours earlier.

Another law enforcement officer was wounded in the shooting, and the suspect was later pronounced dead.
