FLORENCE, S.C. — Family, friends and fellow officers gathered in Florence on Sunday to say goodbye to one of their own.
South Carolina State Transport Police Officer Mark S. Reynolds was laid to rest at Elim Baptist Church Cemetery. Reynolds died on Sept. 4 after a medical emergency that occurred during training earlier in the day. Since then, the community has shown an outpouring of support, honoring Reynolds's service and the work of law enforcement around the state.
"Reynolds dedicated much of his life to serving his community," the South Carolina Department of Public Safety said after Sunday's services.
Officials said joined the state transport police in 2022 but was a firefighter for more than a decade before that, officials said.
And so officers, troopers, firefighters and other emergency responders were on hand to pay their respects.
Reynolds was the first transport police officer to die in the line of duty since the agency's creation in 1993, officials said.
Leaders described him as well-liked, respected and highly dependable.
"He will be greatly missed," State Transport Police Colonel Dwayne Wilson said.
