Volunteers needed to help put flags on veterans' graves at Fort Jackson National Cemetery

Volunteers would assemble the Friday afternoon before Memorial Day, in the gravel parking lot at the cemetery.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Looking for a way to honor veterans on Memorial Day? 

Fort Jackson National Cemetery is looking for volunteers to help place flags on veterans' graves Friday, May 24th. 

Those who are interested are asked to come to the cemetery at 4170 Percival Road in Columbia, at 3 p.m. and gather at the gravel parking lot just pass the entry on the left.   

Officials at the cemetery complex will make sure everyone knows what to do and how to help plant flags for the veterans.

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the military.

The day was originally know as Decoration Day in the years following the Civil War, and became an official federal holiday in 1971.  

The Fort Jackson National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 9,000 veterans. It was dedicated in 2008 and is over 580 acres, according to their website.
