Beaufort County, SC (WLTX) -- A person in Okatie in Beaufort County is getting treatment for rabies exposure after being bitten by a coyote that tested positive for the disease.
The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control says the person was bitten on September 25 and that tests the following day confirmed the coyote had rabies.
DHEC says wild animals contract the disease most often, but remind people to vaccinate their pets.
There have been 109 confirmed cases of rabid animals in South Carolina so far this year. During 2013, there were 124 confirmed cases.
Health officials say if you believe you have been exposed to rabies to immediately wash the affected area with soap and water, get medical attention, and report the incident to DHEC.
