Memorial Day shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured in Sumter

Shooting took place at intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive around 7:30 a.m.

SUMTER, S.C. — A Memorial Day morning shooting has left one person dead and another wounded near downtown Sumter, SC. 

Sumter Police (SPD) responded to a call of shots fired at the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive around 7:30 a.m. According to initial information supplied by SPD, the victim's car was stopped at the traffic light on Green Swamp Road when a white sedan drove up alongside it and fired a gun before speeding away.

The victim's car then rolled and crashed at the corner of Purdy and Jenkins streets. The victims -- a 32-year-old driver and 28-year-old passenger -- were found nearby. The passenger was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover from injuries. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Sumter County Coroner's Office has identified the driver as Tavares K McFadden, of Sumter.
