KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — First responders from the Kershaw County Fire Service (KCFS) and Kershaw County EMS were called to the tail race area of the Wateree River early Tuesday morning to assist in the rescue of three stranded canoers.
Kershaw County Communications answered a call around 6 a.m. December 12 regarding three people stranded on an island in the river after their canoe overturned. KCFS personnel arrived on the scene with units Brush 16 (with a boat), Brush 13, Battalion 2, Battalion 3 (with boats). South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) also responded to the call.
KCFS launched water rescue Boat 24 and made their way to the island and evacuated the three canoers to shore. Kershaw County EMS reported no injuries.
