ID=9022681COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A 32-year-old Sumter man has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of multiple counts of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl last year at Fort Jackson.

The Sumter Item reports (http://bit.ly/1of6ckV

) that Leland Victor Nielsen III was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Columbia by Chief United States District Judge Terry Wooten.

The sentence stemmed from an April trial, where a jury found Nielsen guilty of four counts of aggravated sexual abuse and four counts of sexual abuse of a minor.

Prosecutors said Nielsen had methodically performed more sexual acts with the child, culminating in forcible sexual assault on numerous occasions.

U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says the conviction and sentence show people who commit crimes against children have no place in society.
