Man killed while trying to repossess car in Richland County identified

Shooting took place in the Capitol View neighborhood along Fairmont Road

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County deputies say a man was killed while doing his job and attempting to repossess a vehicle in Richland County.

The incident occurred early morning Wednesday, June 12, in the 7200 block of Fairmont Road in the Capitol View neighborhood. Officers said the shooting stemmed from a towing company repossessing a vehicle.

The victim has been identified as 46-year-old Steven Hughes of Lexington. The victim was working for the towing company at the time of his death.

Twenty-year-old Raheem Deangelo Jackson has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime by the Richland County Sheriff's Department in the death.  Jackson has been transported to Alvin S Glenn Detention Center.

At a bond hearing Wednesday, the judge did not set a bond because of the severity of the charge. A circuit court judge will need to consider bond in general sessions court at a later date.

RCSD continues the investigation and is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Sheriff's Department or submit a tip through CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or the P3Tips app.

This is an ongoing story and will be updated as details become available.
