Man hurt after accidentally shooting self inside SouthPark Mall, CMPD says

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a man was taken to the hospital with serious injures after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at SouthPark Mall Saturday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was taken to the hospital after police say he accidentally shot himself in the leg at SouthPark Mall Saturday afternoon. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to SouthPark a few minutes before 4:30 p.m. for a reported shooting at the mall. When officers got to SouthPark, they found a man who had been shot in his upper right leg. 

CMPD confirmed the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted. Medic said the man, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Detectives said there was no threat to the public and officers did not search for any suspects. 

CMPD said Monday that the man was cited for carrying a concealed weapon and the handgun was seized by officers.

WCNC Charlotte has reached out to Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, for further comment. The company has not responded to that request as of Monday, Feb. 28.
