CAYCE, S.C. — One person has died and another injured after a shooting at an apartment complex in Cayce on Monday afternoon.
Cayce Police say the shooting happened 4 p.m. Monday afternoon at Alight Apartments at 800 Alexander Drive in Cayce. The victim that was transported to a local hospital reportedly died from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the victim as Jalen Latrell Allen, 22, of Columbia. An autopsy has been scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on September 12, 2024, at MUSC in Charleston, SC.
Police added they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is not an immediate threat to the residents of the apartments.
Police say all entrances to the apartment complex were temporarily blocked and residents were asked to show a form of identification to enter the apartments.
News19 obtained an email that was sent to residents of the complex following the shooting.
"Cayce Police responded to a report of at least one gunshot that apparently hit the driver of a vehicle in the parking area of our community, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle and striking another person," the apartment complex said in a statement Monday afternoon.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Alight Apartment sent statement to News19 saying “We provide criminal background checks on all applicants, provide multiple daily security patrols, and prohibit all firearms and other weapons in our community. We have already taken legal action and will continue to do so, to remove and to prosecute any resident or guest implicated in this incident or otherwise threatening our community.”
The condition of the person who was struck by the car is unknown at this time.
