Sumter County, SC (WLTX) -- 65-year-old Johnny Singleton was found shot to death while he was behind the wheel on Tuesday, January 27th.
Initially, first responders had thought Singleton died from injuries sustained in the crashed car along Highway 521 near Rembert , but an autopsy revealed that the cause of his death was a gunshot wound, which had been obscured by wounds suffered in the wreck.
Sumter Sheriff Deputies have arrested Matthew Cory Dwyer, 21, of Sumter, and charged him with murder in connection with this shooting.
Sumter Investigators stated that they believe Dwyer was in the vehicle and intentionally shot Singleton on the 27th. Dwyer was also charged for possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
He was taken into custody at his Sumter residence without incident, and transported to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on Wednesday, February 4th.
Sumter County Sheriff Deputies continue to investigate the murder, and stated that additional arrests or charges could come at a later date.
