SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) has announced an arrest has been made in the September 3, 2024, shooting incident that left one 16-year-old dead and another 16-year-old injured in the Dalzell community.
Jonathan Brown, 17, was taken into custody on September 11 and is charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm into a vehicle while occupies, trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a firearm by a person under 18 years of age, possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Brown allegedly fired into a vehicle carrying six juveniles near the intersection of Black River and Edens roads in Dalzell. about 9 miles northwest of Sumter. Inside the car, Jayvion Jones, 16, of Hampton, Georgia, was struck and killed by gunfire and another 16-year-old was injured. Brown was identified as the shooter.
SCSO deputies obtained a warrant for Brown's residence and, during the course of the search, discovered fentanyl and a stolen gun. Brown was arrested for the gun and drugs and later additional warrants were served for murder of Jones and attempted murder of the other occupants of the vehicle.
Brown remains in the SCSO Detention Center, pending a bond hearing before a circuit judge.
