Baby found in backseat after passengers abandon vehicle during Sumter County traffic stop

The child was returned to the mother. Authorities learned the baby was supposed to be in the care of a babysitter.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — A mother has been reunited with her infant child after investigators found the baby in the back seat following an attempted traffic stop.

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said a deputy spotted a vehicle on Highway 378 just after 10 p.m. on Monday and attempted to pull it over.  The sheriff's office said the driver instead pulled into a side road, and the passenger and drivers ran, leaving the car to roll into nearby bushes.

Arriving deputies detained a juvenile and found an infant in a car seat in the back of the car. The infant was taken from the seat and appeared to be OK, officials said. The sheriff's office contacted the Department of Social Services, and the child was returned to the mom. Deputies learned that the child was supposed to be in the care of a babysitter at the time.

Deputies and DSS are still investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Sumter County Sheriff's Office at 803-436-2000. Tipsters can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or CrimeSC.com.
