SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — A Sumter County high school student will not face charges after a BB rifle was found in his car at the school, according to Sumter County deputies.
Deputies say on October 13, 2023, someone reported to the school administrator of Crestwood High School that a student had brought a BB gun to school in their vehicle.
School administrators located the student who was the driver of the vehicle and removed them from class. Deputies say the student voluntarily granted consent to search their vehicle.
Within the vehicle, a tote bag was found containing the BB gun. School officials contacted the Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to Crestwood High School.
The School Resource Officer inspected the bag and found that it contained a black AR SBR BB caliber rifle designed for BB ammunition. The BB rifle was seized and placed into evidence.
According to South Carolina Title Code 6-23-405, a BB gun/pellet gun is not a weapon or firearm.
Deputies say the juvenile will face administrative decisions by the school.
