'Brazen Act': 8-year-old, teen injured during 'spray of gunfire'

A mom and an 18-year-old were outside when shots were fired. The 18-year-old and an 8-year-old, who was inside the home, were injured.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — An 8-year-old and an 18-year-old are recovering after being struck by "a spray of gunfire" Sunday night in Sumter, according to the Sumter Police Department.

Police say the shooting took place along the Lawson Street area around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A mom and an 18-year-old were outside when shots were fired, according to police. The mom was not injured. However, the 18-year-old and an 8-year-old, who was inside the home, were both struck and injured.

The teen was treated and released from Prisma Health Tuomey. The 8-year-old remains in a Columbia hospital and is expected to recover. At least one adult and four other children were inside the home but were not injured.

Investigators say they believe the gunfire came from a dark-colored Ram pickup truck that was seen speeding away from the area at about the time of the shooting.

Police are continuing efforts to locate the pickup and identify those involved in what Sumter Police Chief Russell Roark called a “brazen act” of disrespect and disregard for the safety of others.

“It is imperative that our officers and members of the community continue to work together to identify those involved,” Roark said.

Up to a $2,500 reward is available for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone who saw or heard anything in the area of West Williams, Lawson and Atlantic streets near the time of the shooting or who knows who might have been involved is asked to contact the Sumter Police Department immediately at 803-436-2700.
