YORK, S.C. — A 21-year-old man has died in what the City of York is describing as its first homicide investigation since 2022.
At 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, the York Police Department found Jai’Shaun Young, of Gastonia, dead inside a home on Galilean Road. Young had been shot, according to investigators.
Young's family told WCNC Charlotte he and his friend were going to York to meet two girls they met on social media. WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker spoke with Young's parents one-on-one following the tragedy.
Shauna Burger, Young's Mother, said she is still trying to catch her breath, knowing Young is gone.
"I feel like I’ve had so many panic attacks," Burger said. "It’s like I can't breathe. That was my biggest fear to bury one of my kids.”
Burger said she couldn't believe the news when she found out. She lives in Florida and her son's friends called her. She thought he would be okay but when she heard they were starting CPR, that's when that feeling changed.
Jai'Shaun's Father, Shon, sat next to Shaunda. He said he hoped the person who did this is caught. Shon added the suspect would be able to get visitors through glass while if he wanted to visit his son, it would be in the grave.
No criminal charges have been filed yet against anyone in connection with the case, according to police. They describe the case as active and ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers of York County at 877-409-4321 or visit their website.
Young's mother started a GoFundMe in honor of her son. To donate to Jai'Shaun's GoFundMe, click here.
The city's last homicide was in 2022 when investigators determined two roommates had been fighting.
The City of York's police department has its own jurisdiction separate from that of the York County Sheriff's Office.
