Columbia cab driver shot to death identified, suspect wanted

The man was shot while working for Checker Yellow Cab Company.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia police are investigating the deadly weekend shooting of a cab driver in north Columbia.

Police say the shooting happened in the 4300 block of Brookridge Drive shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Sunday. 

Paul Swatsell, 53, of West Columbia, SC, was transported from the scene by Richland County EMS and taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital where he died 10:40 p.m. on December 15. 

An autopsy indicated that the cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the upper body.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is asking for assistance from the public in locating his next of kin. 

The Coroner asks if anyone knows Swatsell or his family, to please call the Coroner’s Office at 803-576-1799.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the Columbia Police Department are investigating the incident.

While details are limited at this time, police say the man was shot while working for Checker Yellow Cab Company.
