Woman arrested in Mississippi for Columbia murder days after victim dies in hospital

The victim was shot on Oct. 5 and died on Tuesday. The alleged killer was caught on Thursday and is charged with murder.

GULFPORT, Miss — A 25-year-old woman is in custody awaiting extradition back to Columbia for murder days after the person she allegedly shot died.

Columbia Police said the shooting happened on Oct. 5 in the 2100 block of Waverly Street and led to the victim, 49-year-old Bobby O. Steele, being taken to an area hospital for treatment. On Tuesday, Steele died, upgrading the charges against his shooter to murder.

Investigators determined that the person was Sarah Elizabeth Eltman. The United States Marshal Service Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested her on Thursday in Gulf Port, Mississippi. Eltman, who awaits transport back to South Carolina, also faces a charge of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Authorities said an argument preceded the shooting but didn't elaborate on the dispute.
