Corrections Officers Accused of Trying to Kill Inmate

The South Carolina Department of Corrections has charged and fired three of their officers who they say tried to kill an inmate.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The South Carolina Department of Corrections has charged and fired three of their officers who they say tried to kill an inmate.

Agents say 26-year-old Jarrell Kwabbie Boyan, 24-year-old Pernell Fogle, and 24-year-old Jaquan Smith are all charged with attempted murder and misconduct in office. If convicted, the attempted murder charge carries a charge of 30 years in prison.

Officers say back on October 6, the suspect stabbed an inmate four times in the torso at Kirkland Correctional Institution on Broad River Road. At the time, the inmate's hands were handcuffed behind his back.

After the incident, the three were put on administrative suspension without pay, and then had their employment terminated on November 30.

Boyan had been with the agency since 2010, Smith was hired in 2014, while Fogle had been there since 2015.

This is the second incident of alleged misconduct by a corrections officer made at Kirkland just this week. On Wednesday, the Department of Corrections announced that Tierra Shante Armstrong, 25, has been charged with assault and battery third degree. A warrant stated she hit a male inmate in the face several times while that prisoner was handcuffed.
