Ohio grandmother dies days after shooting: Suspect also accused of killing Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter

Hardy’s grandmother -- identified as 63-year-old Beatrice Porter -- died July 4 after she was shot in Garfield Heights.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — When 24-year-old De’Lawnte Hardy allegedly shot and killed Cleveland police officer Jamieson Ritter last week, it happened as authorities were attempting to arrest him for felonious assault in which he's accused of shooting his grandmother in Garfield Heights days earlier.

Now, 3News has learned that Hardy’s grandmother -- identified as 63-year-old Beatrice Porter -- has died from her injuries.

In new details released Monday, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office says Porter died July 4 at MetroHealth Medical Center.

The case dates back to June 29 when officers responded to the 12800 block of Reindeer Avenue in Garfield Heights after her husband reported that he found her laying in a pool of blood.

Upon their arrival, officers found Porter was unresponsive with shallow breathing.

A police report also says the husband reported that Porter’s grandson had been at the residence earlier in the day.

SHOOTING DEATH OF OFFICER RITTER

Just a few days later, in the early morning hours on the Fourth of July, Cleveland officer Jamieson Ritter was among those who responded to the 1500 block of East 80th in the search for Hardy.

"Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the male," Cleveland Division of Police Chief Annie Todd said during a press conference last week. "The male did exit the house and tried to leave the area on a bicycle. Officers attempted to arrest the male when the male produced a firearm and began firing multiple times. One of our members was struck by one of those bullets. He was transported to the hospital and he did expire at the hospital from his injuries."

HARDY IN COURT

Hardy is currently being held on a $5 million bond in connection with the death of officer Ritter. He made his first court appearance in the case last Friday in which the state provided additional details regarding the case.

“The officers were searching for this defendant because of an incident that occurred in Garfield Heights on Friday, June 29. Allegedly on that day, the defendant stole his grandmother’s gun and shot her in the face."

Records show Hardy is due back in Cleveland Municipal Court for a preliminary hearing in the case connected to officer Ritter on Wednesday, July 17, at 8:30 a.m.
