Alvin S. Glenn detainee returns to jail after walking away from hospital

An incident report states Latoya Denise Rivers left the hospital premises while a corrections officer was in the restroom.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A woman who briefly escaped custody during a medical visit earlier this week turned herself in the next day, authorities say.

According to a report filed by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, 30-year-old Latoya Denise Rivers escaped from custody after being brought to an area hospital on Monday.

The report stated that Rivers had been escorted by a corrections officer but had walked away from the premises while the officer was in the restroom. Authorities said Rivers was in jail on a first-degree assault and battery charge following an arrest by the Columbia Police Department at the time.

Her disappearance led to an area search but the sheriff's department report said that their K-9s were unable to pick up her trail.

A Richland County spokesperson confirmed, however, that she turned herself in on Tuesday.

Records at Alvin S. Glenn show that Rivers is currently detained and was granted a $100,000 surety bond in city court for escape. However, she currently has no bond for the original assault and battery charge.
