Two Alvin S. Glenn inmates hospitalized after drug overdoses, deputies say

Narcan was administered at the Richland County jail

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two detainees being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia experienced drug overdoses Tuesday afternoon, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department. 

Deputies with the Richland County Sheriff's Department were called to the county jail off Bluff Road around 4:30 p.m. Jail staff informed the responding deputy that two detainees overdosed and were administered Narcan at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for treatment, while and two others were being seen by the detention center's medical staff after using drugs.

One of the hospitalized detainees had smoked "K2," a synthetic marijuana before experiencing symptoms of an overdose. It is not known what type of drug the other three inmates may have used.

This is an ongoing investigation and this story will be updated as details become available.

This year, there has been a series of detainee overdoses at Alvin S Glenn. There were three non-fatal overdoses in August, following three fatal overdoses in mid-July.
