Coroner identifies driver who died after early morning Sumter crash

Authorities said the crash happened before 1:45 a.m. on Saturday

SUMTER, S.C. — The Sumter Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that happened early Saturday morning.

Police said the crash happened at West Liberty Street/Pinewood Road and Wedgefield Road around 1:45 a.m. Police said one vehicle veered off the road and hit a pole and a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The 22-year-old driver, identified by the Sumter County Coroner's Office as Meagan Hudson of Sumter County, died after being taken to Prisma Health Tuomey. Authorities said there were no passengers in the vehicle at the time.

Coroner Robbie Baker said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Sumter Police are also still investigating the crash.
