Driver struck by stray gunfire in Sumter dies from injuries

Police say a driver struck by stray gunfire in Sumter on Monday died from his injuries on Tuesday.

SUMTER, S.C. — A driver struck by stray gunfire in Sumter on Monday has died from his injuries, according to Sumter police.

59-year-old Blaine Varner of Sumter died on Tuesday as a result of injuries suffered on Monday, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

On Monday, police say they received calls reporting gunfire from two cars traveling along North Purdy Street near Broad Street around 12:30 p.m.  

As officers were responding, they say they learned of a nearby vehicle that veered off the road but was not involved in the gunfire.

Officers found the driver, Blaine Varner, injured from what appeared to be a gunshot and provided care at the scene. He was transported to the local hospital, where he died from his injuries on Tuesday

Police say the investigation remains active, and police are asking the public for any information describing the vehicles, persons involved or other knowledge they might have about the incident.
