Empty vehicle crashes into home during Sumter County pursuit; suspect found hiding nearby

Authorities said the crash caused about $7,000 in damage.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The Sumter County Sheriff's Office has arrested a man after a stop for a simple violation turned into a pursuit that ended with damage to a home.

The sheriff's office said the incident began near Broad Street and Eagle Road when a deputy noticed an expired license plate and pulled over the vehicle. The sheriff's office said the driver didn't provide a driver's license and used a false name to identify himself. When the deputy returned to his vehicle, authorities said the suspect drove away.

The deputy followed with emergency lights activated. The sheriff's office said the suspect turned into a nearby mobile home park and exited his vehicle as it was still moving. The vehicle crashed into a nearby home, causing what the sheriff's office estimated was $7,000 in damage.

Meanwhile, the driver, identified as 20-year-old Jason Lee Austine Manthei, was found hiding not far away and arrested. Jail records show Manthei was charged with a second offense of driving under suspension, a first offense of failure to stop for blue lights, a first offense of possession of less than one gram of methamphetamine or cocaine base and a temporary tag violation.

He was taken to the Sumter County jail, where a judge granted a $6,064 surety bond and a $1502.50 personal recognizance bond.
