Motorcycle rider and man checking his mailbox killed in Lexington County collision

Both the person driving the motorcycle and the man were killed in the collision near Red Bank.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Two people are dead after a collision involving a motorcycle and a person checking his mailbox in Lexington County Tuesday. 

South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) Master Trooper Brandon Bolt reported details of a fatal accident that occurred around 9:55 p.m.  According to the SCHP report, a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle with two passengers was traveling west on Kyzer Road, near Honors Court in the Red Bank area of Lexington County, when the motorcycle collided with a pedestrian attempting to cross Kyzer Road. 

The collision caused the motorcycle to leave the road, striking a wall and a tree. The driver of the motorcycle and the pedestrian died at the scene.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said the pedestrian was 63-year-old Kevin Scott Collins. Fisher said he was checking the mailbox when he was struck by the motorcycle rider, who she identified as 17-year-old James Leonard Ely III.

The passenger on Ely's motorcycle was transported to a local hospital by EMS.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident.
