Fatal collision claims life on Lower Richland Boulevard near Air Base Road in Richland County

20-year-old driver fled scene Tuesday night, later arrested

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) released details of a fatal traffic accident on Lower Richland Boulevard. The involved a John Deere tractor and a 2016 Hyundai sedan around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 30.

At the time of the incident, the tractor was facing north, working to remove a tree from the roadway on Lower Richland Boulevard near the intersection of Air Base Road when the Hyundai, traveling south, hit the tractor then went off the left side of the road. A passenger in the Hyundai sustained fatal injuries. 

The driver of the Hyundai was uninjured and fled the scene on foot. He was later arrested and identified as 20-year-old Jalen Woodard, of Richland County. Woodard was charged with leaving the scene of a collision involving death and booked into Alvin S Glenn Detention Center, pending a bond hearing.

SCHP continues to investigate the incident.
