FBI renews call for answers in disappearance of South Carolina woman, 2-year-old in Sumter

Sophia Van Dam's family contacted authorities when they lost contact with her and her child, Matteo.

SUMTER, S.C. — Federal, state and local law enforcement are renewing a call for answers ahead of the 21st birthday of a South Carolina woman who, along with her 2-year-old son, has been missing for months.

The FBI released a statement on Friday with a message from the mother of Sophia Van Dam, who desperately wishes to see her daughter and grandson, Matteo, again.

"We love her and Matteo very much, and we're waiting to celebrate her birthday in style when she comes home," Theresa Van Dam said.

As Sophia turns 21 on Saturday, many questions remain as authorities with the FBI, Sumter Police Department, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division continue searching for this mother and son.

Officials said the two were first reported missing from their home on Wilson Street in Sumter on June 24 after not making contact with any family members. Authorities found her car at the house but no signs of Sophia or Matteo. Sophia is originally from the Beaufort area, so authorities in that area are also involved in the investigation.

In Friday's statement, Theresa described her daughter, the youngest of five, as a leader who takes charge and makes others laugh. She described her grandson as someone full of energy who loves to be outside.

"He just always had a spark in his eye," Theresa said.

She told officials there's an "empty hole" in her life without them, but she still has hope.

"I want them found. I want my family brought back to me," she said.
