SLED charges Colleton County Clerk of Court's son with wiretapping

Jeffrey Colton Hill, son of Colleton County Clerk of Court, faces charges for recording phone conversation

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. — After an investigation, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents have charged former Colleton County Information Technology Director Jeffrey Colton Hill with wiretapping.

Hill, 34, is the son of Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill. She is currently in the middle of Alex Murdaugh's defense motion for a new trial after being accused of jury tampering during Murdaugh's double murder trial.

Jeffrey Hill allegedly intercepted and listened to a phone call between two persons on July 20, 2023, while he was employed as the county's Information Technology Director. A search warrant obtained for phone records confirmed the phone conversation was recorded by an IP address belonging to a computer assigned to Jeffrey Hill. Neither victim was aware their conversation was being recorded, nor had they given consent to be recorded.

SLED is working with the Public Integrity Unit of the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office -- a collaboration between the 1st and the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Offices consisting of senior-level attorneys and investigators who work with law enforcement agencies to review officer-involved shootings, use of force cases within their circuits, and alleged public corruption.

Jeffrey Hill has been booked into the Colleton County Detention Center.
