COLUMBIA, S.C. — A suspect wanted in Cobb County, Georgia, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon by Richland County Sheriff's Department's (RCSD) special response team (SRT) and fugitive task force after a more than two-hour standoff in a north Richland community.

Julio Figueroa, 39, initially fled from police after attempting to kill an officer in Cobb County on July 17, 2024. Investigators with the Cobb County Police Department in Marietta, Georgia, had reason to believe Figueroa might be in the Columbia area after they were able to confirm he had taken a Greyhound bus to Richland County.

RDSC investigators were able to locate Figueroa's relatives, and an SRT unit was sent to the address. The unit arrived at a residence on Summer Court, in the Carriage Oaks subdivision off Clemson Road, around 3 p.m. on July 17 and made initial contact with a female family member and her two young children. The woman and children were removed from the home unharmed.

Figueroa barricaded himself at the home while SRT members made repeated callouts, trying to get the suspect to surrender.

RCSD Negotiators arrived at the scene and also attempted to contact Figueroa. After initial contact, Figueroa turned off his phone around 5 p.m. At that time, RCSD deputies used "chemical munitions to affect compliance." Figueroa eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. He is being held at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, awaiting extradition to Cobb County, Georgia.

Figueroa is wanted in Cobb County on charges of Aggravated Assault of an Officer with a Weapon, first-degree burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon, obstruction felony, possession of burglary tools, and loitering/prowling.
