COLUMBIA, S.C. — An inmate received treatment this week following the latest reported stabbing at the Richland County jail.

According to a report filed by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on Monday around 11 p.m. to a reported assault. They arrived to find one inmate already receiving treatment for stab wounds and unable to speak because he was receiving oxygen.

The watch commander told investigators that the incident involved at least two subjects after the victim came downstairs. The report states both subjects had improvised weapons known as shanks in their possession and began stabbing each other. Officials said another fight also broke out nearby.

While redactions make some points of the incident unclear, the report states one of the inmates involved in the incident ran downstairs after he felt someone approach him from behind. The inmate said he was stabbed and pulled out a shank to defend himself.

Deputies have turned the scene over to the Criminal Investigation Division.

The report lists one unnamed victim, one unnamed suspect and one count of aggravated assault - lynching or affray.
