MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. — State officials are investigating the death of a South Carolina Prison inmate after he was found dead in his cell on Friday.
According to a statement from the South Carolina Department of Corrections, Travis L. Smith was being housed at Evans Correctional Institution when he was found unresponsive in his cell just after noon. Authorities said his death is being investigated as a homicide but didn't elaborate.
An autopsy is planned, and the South Carolina Department of Corrections Inspector General's Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Marlboro County Coroner's Office are investigating the death. No additional details were available as of Friday night.
