JASPER COUNTY, S.C. — South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) reports the death of an inmate at Ridgeland Correctional Institution Monday, March 20, 2023.
Joel Nathaniel Witman, 32, died at a local hospital in Jasper County early Monday morning. According to SCDC, Witman was seen by by the medical staff at Ridgeland Sunday evening and was administered two doses of Narcan and given CPR before transportation to a nearby hospital.
His death is being investigated as a suspected drug overdose. An autopsy will be performed and the case is under investigation by the SCDC Inspector General's office.
