RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Richland County officials say an inmate was found dead at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on Thursday morning.
According to a statement from the county, employees found the inmate unresponsive in his cell around 7:15 a.m. during the morning meal pass. The county said the detention center's on-site medical team responded and worked with Richland County Emergency Medical Services to save the person's life but were unsuccessful.
The county has not released the person's cause of death and said the coroner's office is investigating. However, officials said the deceased had a pre-existing medical condition, no signs of physical trauma, and no cellmate.
News19 is contacting the Richland County Coroner's Office for additional information and checking with the Richland County Sheriff's Department to determine if it is also involved in the investigation.
