COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Richland County Sheriff's Department is investigating an incident at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center where an inmate was stabbed multiple times. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. Tuesday, October 17.
Deputies responded to the county's detention center after a report of a 26-year-old male detainee had been assaulted with a sharp object and stabbed "a number of times." The inmate was transported to a local hospital with multiple stab wounds to his back.
No suspect has yet been identified.

Since the beginning of September 2023, there have been a number of incidents involving detainees at Alvin S. Glenn -- two rapes, three assaults, and two other stabbing incidents. Richland County Council hired its first compliance director for the detention center on September 25. Part of the compliance director's job will be to address security concerns at the detention center.
