KERSHAW, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Corrections said an inmate at Kershaw Correctional Institute stabbed his roommate after holding him hostage for about two hours
The incident happened on Monday morning, January 20.
The inmate's mental health counselor helped resolve the situation without further violence. Internal and criminal charges will be filed against the inmate, identified as Matt Samuel Cox.
The inmate victim is being treated at the facility for non-threatening wounds.
Cox had been in prison on possession of a weapon. Prison records show he was service a sentence for kidnapping and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature out of Sumter County.
