ATLANTA — A teenager was shot to death after getting into an argument over a scooter early on Wednesday.
Jakari Brooks' body was found lying in a wooded area near homes on Cato Street near Hollywood Boulevard, according to police.
“I don’t really know the details of it. But I have a son who is not coming home anymore and I’m not going to be able to see him," said his mother, Stardrecous Brooks.
Unfortunately, this family is no stranger to tragedy. Jakari is the 16-year-old nephew of Rayshard Brooks, who was shot to death by an Atlanta Police Department officer in a Wendy’s parking lot back in 2020.
The shooting divided the city and sparked protests. One of the organizations that looked to bring peace and unify the community following Rayshard Brooks' death is now working behind the scenes on Jakari’s case.
“We check the temperature and see where their head is. Because this is a young man. He had a young brother," Leonard Dungee, who runs the Atlanta Branch of HOPE Hustlers. "We want to make sure it stops here because violence is a disease. It just perpetuates, so we want to stop anything else from happening."
Atlanta Police aren’t sharing if anyone is being questioned or is in custody in connection with this case.
