KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) continues to investigate after a report of an intruder at Midway Elementary School Wednesday afternoon.
Multiple KCSO deputies and officers from the Department of Natural Resources responded to a call to the school in Cassatt around 3:15 p.m. regarding a sighting of a man dressed in camouflage and carrying a firearm behind the school bus parking lot. The man reportedly went into the woods near the school after the call was made to KCSO dispatch.
KCSO's K9 tracking unit and drone team were deployed in an attempt to find the man but no one was found in the woods where the man was last seen.
Three witnesses came forward from the school -- two said they had talked to the man but saw no firearm, the third witness was not positive about seeing a firearm.
KCSO cannot confirm the presence of a firearm or that any crime was committed. Investigators will continue to determine the identity of the male and, as a precaution, will have extra deputies at Midway Elementary Thursday morning.
