Identity confirmed of body of man found at Lexington County Motel 6 in August 2023

DNA analysis confirmed identification of man who had died 2 or 3 weeks before body was found

LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has been able to confirm the identity of a dead man who was found in an abandoned motel near Saint Andrews Road. Fisher estimated the man had been in the room at the Motel 6 for about two to three weeks before it was found by passerby looking for a friend. The motel closed permanently on March 1, 2023, and has since been demolished.

DNA analysis and tips received from friends and a possible family member allowed Fisher to positively identify the man as 49-year-old Anthony Wayne McCollough, of Columbia.

An autopsy performed on August 16 found the cause of death to be an accidental overdose of drugs, including methamphetamines and fentanyl.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office appreciates all of the tips and information received in this case which led to the positive identification of Mr. McCullough.
