COLUMBIA, S.C. — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced deputies have arrested a man suspected of firing the shots that killed a 27-year-old woman in October 2021.

Carlos Renard Dates, 34, was arrested at his Lexington home on Monday, April 10, 2023. In addition to being charged with the murder of Sidney Williams, Dates faces two counts of attempted murder and weapons violations.

At approximately 9 p.m. on Oct. 21, Richland County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a call of shots fired at an apartment in the 3400 block of Kay Street. That area is between Broad River Road and I-26, just off St. Andrews Road.

Arriving at the scene, deputies found Williams in the kitchen area with gunshot wounds to the upper body. Responding EMS personnel pronounced her dead at the scene. Two men were also in the apartment at the time of the shooting but were not injured.

Investigators say Dates fired a gun into the apartment through a window following an argument he had with one of the men in the apartment.

Dates has been booked into Alvin S Glenn Detention Center.
