Man struck by stray bullet during rolling gun battle in Lower Richland

A friend told deputies that the occupants of two vehicles were shooting at one another when the victim was hit by a bullet.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a man walking along a road in Lower Richland was hit by a stray bullet during a rolling gun battle early Thursday morning.

According to an incident report filed by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, deputies were responding to reports of gunfire in the vicinity of Acie Avenue outside of Hopkins just after midnight when they were diverted to a person shot on Crosshill Road near American Avenue.

The report stated that arriving deputies found a man lying in the road with a friend standing nearby who claimed to have seen the incident and called emergency services. As deputies helped the victim, they were told that two vehicles were speeding through the area, shooting at each other and that the victim was hit by one of the bullets.

The gunfire allegedly started near Cabin Creek Road, and one of the vehicles turned right onto Crosshill Road and continued past American Avenue.
