Man Who Shot at Sumter Deputies Still on the Run

Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- Local, state and federal authorities are continuing to search for a man wanted for multiple charges including attempted murder in connection to a domestic incident that officials say led to a high-speed chase and multiple shots fired at officers.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Sumter Police Department, with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division and the U.S. Marshals Service, are continuing to look for 25-year-old Dontrell Montese Carter. Officials say Carter led officers on a high-speed chase along U.S. 521 North before wrecking down an embankment in between 1 AM and 2 AM on September 18th.

They say Carter got out of his vehicle and fired shots from a semi-automatic rifle at officers before he fled into the woods. There were no injuries, but a Sumter Police Department vehicle was struck multiple times.

Carter faces charges of domestic violence, failure to stop for a blue light and siren, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, seven counts of attempted murder, driving under suspension and firing shots into a dwelling, all from the September 18 incidents.

Officials say Carter also has pending charges from the Sumter Police Department including a 2008 armed robbery charge and an unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of a stolen firearm in 2010, an attempted murder charge as well as discharging a firearm into a vehicle both in 2013, and a 2014 charge of grand larceny from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say Carter is considered armed and dangerous and is believed to have connections in North Carolina, Homestead/Miami, Fla., Florence and Myrtle Beach, as well as Sumter.

Carter is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds. When he was last seen, Carter had dreadlocks and a mustache, but officials say he could have changed his appearance. He has no known scars or tattoos.

Officials say anyone who sees Carter should not approach him but should immediately call 911.

Information about his whereabouts can also be given to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000 or the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700.

A cash reward could be available for information leading to an arrest. Callers can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
