Atlanta mother found dead 2 years after teen son, brother found shot to death, family says

Chanell Crosby's death comes just two years after her teenage son, Jamiren Crosby, and her brother, Darrio "Polo" Giles, were both found shot and killed.

ATLANTA — The mother of a 13-year-old boy who was found shot and killed in DeKalb County back in 2022 has now been found dead in Atlanta, the boy's father and police told 11Alive on Friday.

Atlanta Police put out a missing person's report for 35-year-old Chanell Crosby on Thursday night. They said her family last saw her between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on July 14. Police said their investigation showed she could have been in the Macon area.

However, on Friday, while interviewing with 11Alive's Cody Alcorn, Chanell's dad and Jamiren's grandfather, Don Wilson, said he received a call from police saying that Chanell's body had been found.

MARTA Police said that one of its officers was flagged down around 2 p.m. about a car that was giving off a bad smell in the area of the West End MARTA station. When the officer walked over, they found a body in the back seat of the car. The car was found roughly nine miles from Chanell's home, Wilson said.

In an update, the Atlanta Police Department confirmed that investigators had found Chanell's body. APD said it will be taking the lead on the investigation. Family has started an online fundraiser to help with burial expenses.

Chanell's death comes a little less than two years after her son, 13-year-old Jamiren Crosby, was found behind a townhome on Parkway Trail in Lithonia on Sept. 19, 2022. His death was ruled a homicide, and almost two years later, there have still been no arrests made in his case.

11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross spoke to Chanell after the death of her son two years ago. She recalled the time when her son asked her to go with him to his fifth-grade dance. She had said that she had never worn a prom dress until she got the chance to go with her son.

Chanell's tragic and heartbreaking loss of her son Jamiren was actually not the first devastating death in her family that year. On April 20, 2022, Chanell's brother, Darrio "Polo" Giles, was found shot and killed inside the Seven Court Apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW.

Polo's family told 11Alive at the time that he had just won about $4,000 in a progressive slot machine, and think the person who killed him was after that cash. They said the morning he was found, the cash was also gone.

Atlanta Police later said their preliminary investigation showed his death resulted from an attempted robbery.
