Mother of 2 dead, suspect leads Kershaw County deputies on high-speed chase

A domestic homicide left a woman dead, a man in jail and two young children without a mother.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — A man is in custody after Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan says he led deputies on a high-speed chase after allegedly shooting the mother of his children.

The incident began around 11:46 p.m. Thursday. Authorities said deputies with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) received a call about a shooting on Boyd Road in Camden. A female victim was reportedly shot by the father of her two young children. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.

The male suspect, later identified as 51-year-old LaQuincy Pollard of Cassatt, had left the scene before deputies arrived.

A few minutes later, around 11:52 p.m., a deputy spotted Pollard's vehicle traveling along Dicey Creek Road towards Hwy 1. The deputy attempted a stop, but Pollard instead chose to run, reaching speeds over 120 mph during the chase on Hwy 1 involving KCSO and Camden Police.

Pollard eventually stopped his vehicle at a gas station in Bethune and surrendered to law enforcement.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called to process the crime scene.

KCSO was notified around 1 a.m. Friday that the female victim had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sheriff Boan released this statement, "Two young children had their lives changed forever tonight due to a horrible decision by someone they looked to as a protector, their father. These precious, innocent children lost both of their parents tonight for no good reason. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers."

Pollard is currently being held at Kershaw County Detention Center, charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, failure to stop for blue lights and other offenses.
