No charges to be filed regarding loaded gun found at local elementary school

Custodian found a loaded weapon at Round Top Elementary in Blythewood on Dec. 11

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Richland County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) says no charges will be filed in the case of a loaded gun found at an elementary school in Blythewood.

On Monday, Dec. 11, the evening custodian at Round Top Elementary School, on Rimer Pond Road in Blythewood, found a loaded weapon in the teachers' work room around 5 p.m. The assistant principal at the school contacted RCSD and the gun was collected by deputies and an investigation was launched as to the owner of the weapon.

RCSD determined the gun was the property of a school security guard. The security guard does have a concealed weapon carry permit and investigators say it was his personal weapon that was left in the teachers' workroom.

No charges will be filed by RCSD and any administrative or disciplinary action will be up to the Richland District Two School District.
